First printed in 1962, this publication contains 15 of Leonard Bernstein's 53 televised lectures and concerts with the New York Philharmonic adapted for book form, and including many illustrations and musical examples. The lectures in the book are from 1958 to 1969 and discuss the definition of music, American music, melody, orchestration, Classical music, the concerto, folk music, Impressionism, sonata form, modes, and composers Sibelius and Berlioz. The book features a biography of the composer and conductor and a list of the concerts from 1958 to 1972 with the repertoire performed, and the reprint has a new introduction by Michael Tilson Thomas.
