This recording of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is the result of a series of six concerts
that Glenn Gould and Herbert von Karajan have in May of 1957 in Berlin. While the two
artists often resided in opposite camps when it came to interpretation, this performance is
unique in its moments of compromise and true collaboration. Unlike the recording Gould
made of this same work in 1959 with Leonard Bernstein, this performance flows with
lyricism and beauty under Karajan’s leadership.
