Recorded by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta, Barber's Adagio for Strings has a long association with grief stretching back to 1945, when it was used for a radio broadcast announcing Franklin D. Roosevelt's death. The works of Barber's direct contemporary, Aaron Copland, evoke America's vast landscapes and the spirit of the pioneer.
